MY NUCLEUS
I have twenty-eight protons and twnety-eight electrons in the nucleus. I actually have thirty-one neutrons, and so my mass number or true atomic weight is about 58.6934 grams/mole. I am in Group 10, Period 4, and Block D. One of my isotopes is 61Ni. I have five naturally occuring isotopes. 58Ni, 60Ni, 61Ni, and 62Ni all have sixteen neutrons, but 64Ni has at least seventeen. I have six radiosotopes.

MY ELECTRONS
I have twenty-eight electrons and two valence electrons.

My ground state electron configuration is [Ar].3d8.4s2, and my shell structure is 2.8.16.2.

MY PROPERTIES
My name is Nickel, and my symbol is Ni. My standard state is usually solid at 298 K. My color is kind of lustrious, metallic, and I have a silvery tinge. I am classified as metallic and a transition metal, and am available in the following forms: foil, powder, flakes, sheet, wire, mesh, spheres, rods, and "evaporation slugs."

My melting point is at 1455 °C, or just 2651 °F. My boiling point goes up to 2913 °C, or at 5275 °F. The liquid range is at 1458 K. There is no data on my critical temperature and superconduction temperature.

MY HOME
I am not easily found in humans, although I am an essential trace element in many species that do not include only humans. My human abundance (/ppb by weight) is only 100, and the other (/atoms (C = 1,000,000)) is actually at 11. I will first list the human abundances, the parts per billion by weight, and then the parts per billion by atoms after a slash mark.

MY STORY

In 1751, I was discovered by Axel Fredrik Cronstedt in Sweden. My name, "Nickel," came from the German word, "kupfernickel." It meant "Devil's copper" or "Saint Nicholas's copper."

MY JOBS
I am used extensively in coinage, armor plate, and burglar-proof vaults. I can also be added to glass; I give windows its green color. For other metals, I provide as a protective outer varnish. You can also find me in batteries and some forms of electroplating.
