My Nucleus
  • 10 protons in the nucleus
  • Average of 10 neutrons in the nucleus (my different isotopes have different numbers)
  • Average atomic mass of 20.179
  • Because of my different isotopes, my atomic mass is an average.

[Bohr Model of Neon]

My Electrons
  • I have 10 electrons.
  • I have 8 valence electrons
  • I have 2 core electrons
  • My electron configuration is...
  • Because I have 2 filled energy levels, I am stable and don't make ions
Kossel shell structure of Ne

My Properties
  • Second lightest noble gas
  • colorless gas
  • nearly inert noble gas
  • Reddish-orange color when put inside of a vaccuumvacuum tube.
neon - Chemistry with Mr. Olson
  • Melting point:-248.59 C
and -415.46
  • Boiling point:-246.08 C and -410.94 F
  • Density:.9002g/L
  • Atomic Radius:38 pm

My Home
(Body, Planet, Universe
  • Neon is very rare on Earth
  • .0018% of Earth's atmosphere is neon
  • Is only found in the atomosphere in one place at 65,000
  • However it's abundant in the universe
  • I am non- toxic but am still not found in the human body because I can deprive it of oxygen

I am Element!

  • A helium- neon laser

My Compounds
(My Friends!)
  • I have no friends because I am a noble gas!
  • I am stable already
  • I do not need to gain or lose elecrons
  • However, there is little evidence that it could form a compound with fluorine

My Story
  • I was discovered in 1898
  • I was discovered by Scottish chemist William Ramsay
  • I was also discovered by British chemist Morris Travers, below.
neon - Chemistry with Mr. Olson
  • My name "neon" is Greek for "new" since I was a newly discovered element at the time

My Jobs
  • I can be put into vaccuum tubes and I glow and give off a nice color
  • I am often used in signs
  • Used to make high voltage indicators
  • Used to make helium- neon lasers
  • Liquified neon refrigerates
  • Used to make wave meter tubes
  • Also used in television tubes.
  • I am also used to make lightning arrestors
